Chile Grill-Jalapeno Corer
A few weeks past I wrote an article regarding “The Chile Twister” expressing through my experience that it was one of the best tools I’ve ever used. Well a couple of weeks ago I was contacted by David Fillmore of Iron Desert (www.irondesert.com) who disagreed with my article. David was polite with his criticism but at the same time to the point stating that he had a tool that was far superior to The Chile Twister.
To me it was like the battle of the hamburger, who has the better burger out there and why? I told David that it was easy to say his tool was better then The Chile Twister, but until I tested it and used it I couldn’t agree with his claim of supremacy. With that, David sent The Bossman a Jalapeño Corer for review.
First off I could tell this was a tool in which a lot of thought went into its design and feel. One of the comments that David made to me was that compared to The Chile Twister, The Jalapeño Corer made little or no mess when preparing Jalapeños. I was also told by Dave that in his opinion The Chile Twister tore Jalapeños during the coring process, were the Jalapeño Corer did not do this as often because of it’s design. With that said I put the Jalapeño Corer to the test.
Here are a couple of pictures of my experience with it:

How The Jalapeño Corer works is that you slide the tool inside the Jalapeño length wise. Once inside you rotate the tool around the inside of the Jalapeño. When doing this the Jalapeño Corer, much like a vegetable peeler scrapes the inside of the pepper into one piece. When removing the tool the seeds and membranes of the pepper are removed in one single plug.
So did it live up to the hype? The Jalapeño Corer did in fact live up to the claims of it’s creator. I was able to core my Jalapeños with little effort and little or no mess. I did how ever have a couple of Jalapeños that tore during the preparation, which I contribute to my inexperience in using the Jalapeño Corer.
I guess the bottom line is which is the better tool? I think my analogy in the beginning of the article of which hamburger is better is probably the best answer I can give. In this case both tools do exactly what they claim to do.
In using both tools, putting them to the test and seeing what they can do, I have to agree with Dave, the Jalapeno Corer did the job with less mess and was more effective in my opinion, in coring out the Jalapeno’s for preparation.

Just as I found the Chile Twister and felt I found the answer to my Jalapeño woes, along comes Iron Desert providing a product that I’ve found to live up to its creators claims and, in my opinion is the better of the two Jalapeño tools. I hope you use the information in this review and that of The Chile Twister article to make an informed decision and chose the tool you feel will met your needs.
I would highly recommend that you take a look at the products Iron Desert offers including The Jalapeno Corer. You can order it from Iron Desert (irondesert.com) direct in either a wooden handle or stainless steel handle for a cost of $4.00 plus shipping and handling.

Okay Chuck. I bought a couple of Chili Twisters after your review and loved how they worked.
Just finished ordering this one. Gotta have the cool cooking toys.
Hope it works as good as you say it does.
