Get Your Grill On

Your first question may be, what the heck is a Fatty? Fatties are probably the most fun and versatile thing ever to hit the grates of your smoker. In its purest form, a Fatty is a one pound package of bulk sausage, like Jimmy Dean, stuffed with just about anything and smoked. The stuffing can be anything from cheese, mushrooms, peppers, bacon, onions, cream cheese or whatever your imagination can come up with.

So this past weekend, a group of friends from across the Midwest came together for a little camping and cooking. The group are members of the BBQ Brethren, an online forum dedicated to discussion and discovery of BBQ. Either as a personal challenge or just something to do, we decided to make the world’s largest Fatty. As far as we knew, no one has ever laid claim to the world’s largest Fatty, so anything we put out there would be the baseline.

We started with two 6 lb. logs of bulk sausage from the supermarket: one hot & one mild. Once melded together into one Super Fatty, a trench was made for the filling. We had someone create a map so we remembered which sections where which. The final product measured 52 1/2 inches long and 5 inches in diameter. Unfortunately, no one remembered a scale, so we don’t know what it weighed in the end.

The move to the cooker was a real trick. It took a two of us propping it up with cutting boards to move it from table to smoker.

The smoker is a Louisiana Grill Country Smoker called the Whole Hog. The pellet grill has two sides that can cook independently, or as one big grill by removing a center divider. It was the perfect grill for the World’s Largest Fatty.

Even Guinness made an appearance!
